Trap a tiny tale and tame it

Are you a young writer in Central Otago with a big imagination? Are you ready to turn your ideas into stories and learn more about being a writer?

Together with the Central Lakes Arts Support Scheme, Queenstown Writers Festival is delighted to support two creative writing workshops for young writers to be held on 21 and 22 August 2021.

In her workshops titled “How to trap a tiny tale and tame it”, writer and educator Heather McQuillan will teach the art of crafting stories to tamariki in our region.

Heather is an internationally recognised writer of flash fiction, a three-time Storylines Notable Books Award winner for her middle grade fiction, and has just completed six months as the University of Otago College of Education/Creative New Zealand Children’s Writer in Residence. For many years, Heather was a classroom teacher and deputy principal. She is now the director of Write On School for Young Writers in Christchurch and works with hundreds of young writers every year. She has a Master of Creative Writing with distinction from Massey University. Heather’s most recent books are Where Oceans Meet and other stories (Reflex Press, UK, 2019) and Avis and the Promise of Dragons (Cuba Press, NZ, 2019).

Saturday’s workshop is aimed at writers in years 7 and 8, while Sunday’s session is suitable for writers in years 5 and 6. Numbers are limited.

For more information and to book go the Eventfinda listings for Years 5 and 6 here, and Years 7 and 8 here.

Funding may be available. Send us an email for more information.

This is a great opportunity for local children to learn more about the art and discipline of writing and to be inspired.

Queenstown Writers Festival aims to develop new writers and is delighted to be part of this event. Who knows, the next Ockham Award Winner may be among us.
